Pedestal Dog Bowl

I needed a water bowl that my new puppy couldn't knock over or climb into and I've seen several of these on Pinterest lately so I thought I'd give it a try.
What you'll need:
  • Pedestal Planter - I've had mine for years, but you should be able to find one at your local garden center.  I've also seen these made using the plastic urns like this one from Amazon.
  • Bowl - My bowl is an old 4 Liter Pyrex mixing bowl that I had stuffed in the back of a cabinet. Just make sure that yours has a small lip that sits on the edge of the planter.  If it doesn't have the lip it will be difficult to remove whenever you need to clean it.
  • Spray Paint - I used Rustoleum 2X Satin Green Apple

This planter has been moved around my yard for years, as you can tell by its condition.  The first step was to try and remove the flaking paint and give it a good general cleaning.   I used a dry wire brush first to remove what paint I could, then I used plain water to help remove as much as possible.

My planter has been sitting in a very shady area of the yard so it had some algae growth that water and elbow grease wasn't going to remove.  So I broke out the Simple Green and used it with the wire brush to try and clean it.

It's not perfect, but it's as good as it's gonna get.

Helpful Hint:  Don't put the planter on the section of your sidewalk that slopes and then sit downhill from it while spraying it with water.  ☺

Now the fun part!  What color should I paint it? I pulled all of the fullest cans of paint that I had because you never know what color might surprise you and look great.  I decided to go with the green in the front - Green Apple.  It seemed like it would be a fun color instead of the expected white or gray.

Let's pretend that I did the right thing and painted this outside instead of in the basement with a fan in the window to suck out the fumes.

I let the paint dry overnight and all I had to do this morning was put the bowl in.  The bowl sticks up a little, but I think I prefer it that way.  There is just enough room for my fingers to get in there and grab the bowl.

This should make it a lot easier to keep fresh water for the puppy when we're outside playing.  No more flipping it over or plopping down in the bowl.  And I won't have to worry about her getting too big for it because it's substantial enough to stand on its own even when she's full grown.
