Acorn the Bear

What you need:
  •  Yarn in two colors – one for the body and a contrasting color for the snout. You can use any weight of yarn that you’d like, the bears in the picture were made with worsted weight using a 3.75 mm hook and dk weight using a 3.25 mm hook.
  • Hook - I suggest that you use a hook that is 2-3 sizes smaller than the yarn recommends.
  • Safety eyes and nose – if making for a small size child you should not use these. You would need to crochet/embroider these details for safety.
  • Poly-fil
  • Stitch markers – optional although highly recommended to keep track of the round count.
  • Yarn needle – used to attach arms and legs as well as hiding ends.
Picture
Stitch Abbreviations: MR – magic ring, sc – single crochet, sc dec – single crochet decrease, sc2tog – single crochet 2 together, sc3tog – single crochet 3 together

It's time to attach the safety eyes. The 2sc in Rnd 20 are the sides of the bear's belly so you
want to make sure those stitches are on the sides when you attach the eyes. I attach my eyes
between Rnds 7 & 8 approximately 3-4 stitches apart. They may look too close together, but
when you stuff the head the stitches will stretch out some and the placement should be
correct. Stuff the head and continue to stuff the body as you work.

Attach safety nose one row above the center. Use the long tail to sew snout onto head
centered below the eyes, lightly stuffing as you go. Use black yarn to add mouth detail.

EARS - Make 2 using body color
1) MR, 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each around. (12)
3) 4 sc in each around. (12)

Fasten off leaving a long tail. Use tail to sew ears onto the top of the head. Weave in ends.

Thread the yarn needle with a 12" piece of yarn. Insert the threaded needle into the side of the
body where you want the limb to be attached. Push the needle straight through, coming out the other side of the body where you want the opposite limb attached. Insert the needle into the arm/leg, pull yarn through and insert needle back into arm catching one stitch with the yarn.  Go back into the body in the same place you came out, through the body and out the same space you went in. Repeat the needle and yarn through the arm/leg, catching a stitch.
Pull the yarn snug and tie off to the starting tail. Trim the ends and hide them inside the body.
